Women Who Speak for God: Prophetesses in the Bible

ONLINE THROUGH WOODBROOKE

From Miriam and Deborah to Mary and Anna, there are women throughout the Bible who are named as prophets and give prophetic speeches. Who are these women who speak for God? What makes them prophetic?

In this six-week course, we will explore the stories of these prophetesses in the Bible and how they appear in culture. How can we understand these narratives? How do they reflect our own experiences? Focusing on the passages about female prophets will give us a deeper understanding of how God calls people to prophetic work, in the Bible and now.

The course will draw on The Women’s Lectionary: Preaching The Women of the Bible throughout the Year (Westminster John Knox Press, 2021), by Ashley M. Wilcox. It will include a combination of lectures and experiential activities, with small and large group discussions. We will use spiritual practices to empathize with these women and understand how they fit into the Biblical tradition.

Preaching the Stories We Don’t Always Hear

ONLINE

Authors and educators Lisa Thompson, C. Wess Daniels, and Ashley Wilcox help us apply less widely-understood themes and stories from the Bible—from The Book of Revelation to the feminine imagery of God—to the world we live in. If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in the same few texts or struggling to relate ancient truth to current events, this discussion will expand your heart and mind.

This is a free event by Faith+Lead through Luther Seminary. Sign up here.
